POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an attempted robbery in Wigan.

At 6.40am today (Friday), a security staff member was delivering money to Asda on Soho Street, Newtown, when she was approached by a man holding a tubular weapon.

She ran into the store for her own protection before the offender got back into his car and drove off.

Nothing was stolen and no one was injured.

The man is described as being of medium build, 5ft 10in tall, wore a dark hooded top with lighter jogging bottoms and had his face covered.

Detective Sergeant Nigel Rigby said: “The staff member is understandably upset about what happened. She was going about her daily business and should not be subjected to such an ordeal.

“From what we have been told, we believe the man had parked a white Audi A1 outside the store before he approached the victim and drove off.

“If you saw the car at the store or driving off through Wigan town centre, I would ask you to contact us.”
