POLICE are preparing to interview a traumatised schoolgirl rape victim.
It is alleged the 13-year-old was sexually assaulted on a recreation field off Wells Place, Scholes.
The area, near to garages, was cordoned off, and scenes of crime officers have combed the area for clues, but detectives are for the moment remaining tight-lipped about much of what is thought to have happened.
Police were contacted about the brutal attack last Thursday, although the incident is said to have happened during the school holidays, shortly before Christmas.
It is the second report of a rape in Wigan to be made public this week.
Police locked down the Chicago Rock Cafe in King Street in the early hours of Sunday morning, after it was alleged that an 18-year-old woman was raped there.
But, despite the measures, her attacker managed to evade arrest and officers are still appealing for information.
As for this second inquiry, police say they have yet to video-interview the victim, and, until then, will not release more details about the incident or the assailant(s).
Sgt Graham Clare from Wigan CID said: “This is clearly a very sensitive investigation and until the girl, who is receiving support from specially trained officers, is interviewed, it would be inappropriate to comment further on what has happened.
“That said, I understand this will cause concern in the community.
“I want to reassure residents that we have a team of highly experienced officers investigating.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the police on 0161 872 5050, or the confidential Crimestoppers hotline anonymously on 0800 555111.
