A SUSPICIOUS item found inside a carrier bag on a supermarket car park forced the closure of a busy Wigan road.

Part of Warrington Road, from the roundabout leading onto junction 25 the M6, was sealed off following the incident on Tuesday morning at the Marus Bridge store as explosive experts were called in to investigate.

Police sealed off the supermarket but once the “suspicious package” was probed, any danger was soon ruled out.

It’s believed an electrical device was found in the bag with wires and tape wrapped around it and nails sticking out, sparking concern.

The road and store re-opened shortly afterwards after causing a number of drivers severe delays as they arrived into town from the motorway or Ashton.

A police spokesman confirmed the incident saying: “At 7.50am on Tuesday July 21, police were called after a suspicious package was found on the car park of Asda on Worthington Way.

“Explosive experts have assessed the package and it has been deemed non-suspicious.”
