TWO Wigan musicians are aiming for a Christmas number one single!

The band Selfish Lovers, which comprises Chris James, 26, Kev Barry, 37, both of Winstanley, Amy Bielizna, 24, Martin Raynor, 35, and Phil Bond, 28, all of Warrington, are releasing a single - Getting Home For Christmas - this month.

The band are signing with record label AWAL after getting lots of air play with BBC Manchester through the 40 Years of Manchester Music celebration.

They have also worked with Pete Coleman, who has worked with musical legends like AC/DC and The Charlatans.

Chris, who was in Wigan band Clownprince, said: “I am really excited about it and looking forward to pushing onwards and getting signed - it is a very strong song.

“We are getting a lot of interest from BBC Manchester, so if DJs pass it on, we could get air play on another station, like Radio 2, where I could see it doing really well. It is a really good Christmas song - upbeat and toe-tapping.”

Selfish Lovers have an indie/pop sound and have been compared to Fleetwood Mac, The Cardigans and The Beautiful South.

The band plan to play some gigs near Christmas and record material in the New Year for an album.

They will also appear on an EP for Children in Need after Christmas and an American Indie label called Ostrich Music has released their single Jay Walking on their new compilation album.

Selfish Lovers are also scheduled to play Glastonbury and Reading festivals next year.

The original band formed in 2007, from advertising and auditions and Chris and Kev joined three months ago.

Amy said: “We are different to other bands. We are different genres which fit together. Chris and Kev have only been in the band three months, but we are doing extremely well.”
