MORE than 2,000 people were plunged in darkness after a massive power cut.
Electricity North West confirmed that the failure happened in the Ashton, Haydock and Golborne areas at around 9.50pm on Thursday.
Engineers worked through the night and managed to restore power to most properties by 9am on Friday.
But as electricity was still out on Friday, pupils at The Byrchall High School were forced to go home after staff were unable to provide heat and light in its premises in Warrington Road.
Haydock Racecourse was also affected, and is still without power.
Electricity was restored to all but three properties by 2pm on Friday.
