Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh (WWL) NHS foundation revealed it was experiencing “a surge in demand on its services,” and asked the public not to come to Wigan A&E unless they had a serious or life-threatening emergency.

A spokesman for WWL said: “All our patients are seen in order of clinical priority. Those with minor concerns may face a longer wait.

“We are therefore appealing to the public to think carefully about the best place to seek appropriate treatment during this time of extreme pressure. Our staff are working tirelessly to the best for our patients.”

It is recommended to use walk-in centres, pharmacies or NHS 111 for all non-emergencies.
