Race for Life becomes two races!

WIGAN'S Race for Life event has become so successful organisers have decided to hold two next year!

The 5km run through the grounds of Haigh Hall in aid of Cancer Research UK is now so popular it has been the first event in the country to fill up for the past two years.

Organisers are aware that hundreds of women are being disappointed by the 1,500 limit but are unable to raise it because of constraints on the width of the paths through the Plantations.

Now after deliberating over the best possible solution organisers of the event, once again sponsored by Tesco and the Wigan Observer, have decided to hold two runs, one on a Sunday as this year and a second evening event, probably mid-week.

There was a suggestion that a second run could be organised on the Leigh side of the borough or two races could take place on the same day, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, but after discussions with Haigh Hall the evening run has been chosen.

James Dunphy, Cancer Research UK organiser said: "Wigan did extremely well with being the first to fill up.

"We have been looking at several ways to expand for next year's event. We decided holding two runs, one in the evening, one on a Sunday, would be the best way. Haigh Hall is a beautiful venue and we already know how successful events there are, so it seemed ideal to use it again.

"The staff at Haigh Hall are fantastic and always do a great job.

"The atmosphere last week was fantastic as usual and I'd like to thank the women of Wigan for their unprecedented support. Everyone should be proud of their achievement."
