TWO children caused mayhem yesterday after running across a Wigan railway line and nearly getting hit by an oncoming train.

The two young boys were cycling along the tracks near Martland Mill Lane, in Beech Hill, at 1pm on Monday when the 12.24 Southport to Manchester Airport Network Rail service came hurling past them.

The driver, who was shocked by the incident, reported the youths for trespassing and the ambulance service was called as a precaution, although the Evening Post understands no-one was hit or injured.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “BTP officers were called to Martland Mill Lane, Wigan, following a report of youngsters on the line.

“Officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) also attended the incident and two young boys were given words of advice before being taken home.”
