A WIGAN driver delivering post to schools has been sacked after bosses belatedly discovered he was a convicted child rapist.
Whistl has blamed an “admin error” for taking on Andrew Horrocks not long after he was released from a 12-year sentence imposed for the repeated rape and sexual assault of a five-year-old girl.
The 35-year-old, formerly of Belle Green Lane, Ince, worked for the Prestwich-based firm for 15 months before the mistake was realised and he was dismissed this week. It is understood that a colleague first voiced concerns.
A statement from the company admitted that Horrocks had declared an unspent conviction but when a Criminal Records Bureau check was carried out, the information was not passed on while he was being taken on.
The firm added: “As soon as we became aware of the conviction, we met with Mr Horrocks and agreed to terminate his employment.
“We are currently undergoing a thorough review of the existing paperwork for delivery personnel and recruitment processes to ensure that this is an isolated incident.
“We are distresed that this situation has arisen as we aim to work to the very highest standards.”
