RESIDENTS looking to do their bit for the environment will have to travel across the borough after a recycling centre temporarily shut its doors.
The Chanters Household Waste Recycling Centre, in Atherton, will close on Monday, September 23 for around two weeks while work on a major traffic project is carried out.
The Arley Way facility will not be in operation due to a new one-way system being constructed in Atherton, and will reopen once work has finished on the road network on Saturday, October 5.
Work has already begun on the new road layout, which is designed to improve the flow of vehicles through the area at peak times and ensure easier access to the recycling centre itself.
Although the brief closure will mean residents looking to ensure their waste does not end up in landfill will have to travel a little further afield than usual, the local authority is asking residents to be patient while the traffic improvements are made and hopes the temporary shutting of the facility will not dampen enthusiasm for carrying out recycling and boosting the borough’s environmental record.
Coun Kevin Anderson, Wigan Council cabinet member for the environment, said: “We apologise for the closure of this site and are asking residents to bear with us for a few days while this important work takes place.
“We know a lot of people rely on the centre and will be inconvenienced.
“However, there are alternative sites not too far away and the closure is only for a few days.
“Wigan Council wants to encourage people to recycle their rubbish responsibly. This centre is very popular and can get busy.
“This work will improve the flow of traffic and make it easier for residents to use the services.
“I think most residents will be pleased we’re investing in such facilities and making them even better.”
The nearest recycling centres for household goods during the closure will be at Slag Lane, in Leigh, and the Kirkless facility on Makerfield Way, in Higher Ince.
The Ince centre is open from 8am until 8pm Monday to Friday and 9am until 6pm at weekends and bank holidays, while the Leigh facility is open from 8am until 9pm.
