A RECYCLING centre temporarily shut for major renovation work will re-open for half term.

Essential upgrading work is currently taking place at the Slag Lane household waste recycling centre in Leigh.

The improvements include re-surfacing, new drainage, improved recycling options for the public and new office and welfare facilities.

The centre is now closed for the installation of a large canopy, measuring 40m by seven metres, to keep people dry as they use the site.

The site will now be open throughout half term, from Monday October 26 to Sunday November 1, and will then close again on Monday November 2 before re-opening on Monday November 16.

Coun Kevin Anderson, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “As part of The Deal we are committed to investing in our recycling centres to ensure that the recycling process for the public is an efficient and enjoyable one.

“To improve the service that we offer at Slag Lane recycling centre we are carrying out this essential work.

“While we unfortunately have to temporarily close the site it will be open during the busier period of half-term.”

During the closure residents can also use alternative recycling centres at Kirkless in Makerfield Way, Higher Ince, which is six miles away, and Chanters Industrial Estate in Atherton, which is five miles away.

Winter opening times for the three household waste recycling centres in the borough, Kirkless, Slag Lane and Atherton, will change from Sunday October 25 when the clocks go back.

The winter opening times are 9am to 6pm including weekends and Bank Holidays.

All sites will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
