A WIGAN man who blackmailed a young woman over sexy photographs was later found to have downloaded thousands of indecent images of children.

A court heard today that Sean Jepson, 19, made the “revenge porn” threats after his relationship with the woman broke up. And in return for his silence he wanted his victim to buy him computer games.

A judge ruled that the blackmail offence crossed the custody threshold but after hearing that Jepson’s behaviour stemmed from his autistic condition he suspended it.

Judge Robert Warnock told Jepson that he was an intelligent young man who had committed a particularly unpleasant blackmail offence.

“It was purely an act of revenge,” he said.

Referring to the pornographic images of children the judge added: “You must understand the children revealed in these image are victims.

“Your problems pale into insignificance compared to what those children are put through so you can have sexual gratification.”

Liverpool Crown Court was told that Jepson had had a largely on-line relationship with a young woman in Jersey during which she sent him sexually explicit photographs of herself, including some naked.

They also met up on one occasion but eventually their relationship broke up.

“He then sent her emails threatening he would distribute the images to her family and friends if she did not buy him various computer games,” said Alex Orndal.

“This went on for about six months. It caused the victim great distress. He said he would be placated if she sent further explicit photographs and she contacted the police on May 16 last year.”

They went to his home and seized five electronic items and he admitted they would find “dodgy stuff on there.”

When examined about 200,000 images were found but because of the large number only 10,000 were examined.

Almost half were in the lowest category of seriousness but there were some in all categories and some were videos, said Mr Orndal.

They also included 2,338 extreme pornographic images involving bestiality, he added.

Duncan Phillips, defending, said 19-year-old Jepson suffers from Asperger’s syndrome and he has an inability to empathise and involve with people.

The condition was diagnosed late as his mother has been concerned with his brother who suffered a catastrophic brain injury.

He is incapable of living independently and would have great difficulty coping with the prison regime as he has fixed routines.

Mr Phillips added that Jepson, of Helvellyn Road, Norley, had started downloading the indecent images as he had a lot of time on his hands and was curious.

Jepson was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment suspended for two years and the judge warned him if he does not comply with the two years supervision element he would be brought back to court and face an immediate jail term.

Jepson had pleaded guilty to blackmail and 24 offences of possessing indecent and extreme porn.

He was ordered to sign on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years, an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order was imposed as was a restraining order not to keep the victim.
