WIGAN borough is celebrating today after it was confirmed it will host matches during the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.
After submitting a strong bid to the Rugby Football League with the full backing of the Wigan Evening Post, the area beat off stiff competition from rival applicants across the country to stage matches in the 14-nation tournament in two years’ time.
Leader of Wigan Council Lord Smith said: “This is fantastic news. Wigan borough has a proud tradition of excellence when it comes to rugby league.
“Our Back the Bid campaign to be a host venue really caught the imagination. We have been supported by both our professional clubs, the amateur network, the business community and by rugby fans.
“Not only do we see this as a homecoming for rugby, but we will also be making sure that hosting the matches provides us with a legacy to help develop the game and encourage more young people to take part.
“We are also keen to capitalise on the economic benefits that being a host venue will surely bring.”
