HUGO Rodallega’s goal 10 minutes from time sealed Wigan Athletic’s Premier League status for the seventh consecutive season – and so began the party of all parties among delighted fans.
Even before the final whistle, as news of the defeats of Blackpool and Birmingham filtered through, the celebrations started among the 1,400 travelling supporters in the Britannia Stadium.
As referee Andre Marriner blew his full-time whistle, scenes of delight and joy erupted on the Wigan bench and on the pitch, the fans behind the goal descended on Latics goalie Ali Al Habsi , and TV cameras captured David Whelan in an emotional embrace with his wife, Pat.
Roll back one week (and 45 minutes) ago, Latics were 2-0 down to West Ham at half-time and it looked like that was that.
But if Roberto Martinez’s men have had one thing this season, it’s fight.
And they showed that in the final 45 minutes last Sunday, and for 90 minutes yesterday.
