STAFF at a Wigan business have spoken of their shock at the damage caused when a stolen car collided into shop fronts in a late night smash.

The vehicle left the carriageway on Ormskirk Road in Pemberton and bounced off the wall of Your Choice fruit and veg store.

When we arrived paramedics were already on the scene and one of the pair was now out of the vehicle. The other was conscious and responding to paramedics

The Mercedes vehicle then shattered a bus shelter, smashed into the shutters of Bargain Booze before colliding with a wall.

Both the passenger and driver were taken to hospital after emergency crews attended the scene just before 4am.

Your Choice owner Richard Mitchell said the shop’s front wall has been pushed back and will need extensive repairs.

He told the Evening Post: “The brick wall has caved in but has managed to stay in one piece.

“My staff heard about it on Facebook and then came to inspect the damage on Sunday, it’s awful.

“Luckily we’ve been able to remain open, it definitely won’t be closing us, that’s for sure.”

The brick wall has been shifted to such an extent that a door to upstairs flats has been wedged permanently closed, he added.

The pair, thought to be in their 20s, were taken to Wigan Infirmary and Salford Royal Hospital respectively.

Watch manager Isaac Olurankinse from Wigan fire station said: “We were called to reports of an RTC at just before 4am with two persons still in the vehicle.

“When we arrived paramedics were already on the scene and one of the pair was now out of the vehicle. The other was conscious and responding to paramedics.

“He was taken to Salford with suspected internal injuries. The other had suffered minor injuries.”

The car is thought to have been stolen from the Salford area earlier in the night, Greater Manchester Police said.

A force spokesman added that an investigation is ongoing into the incident.
