Shops not in danger

The Forum of Private Business has hit out at the Competition Commission's claim that independent shops are not in terminal decline as a result of large supermarkets.

After an 18-month inquiry, the Commission announced a raft of measures to increase competition in the market.

But it insisted that the future of small retailers is not under threat.

FPB's chief executive, Phil Orford said: "Evidence that the number of independent shops in our villages, towns and cities has declined in recent years is there for everyone to see.

"While we welcome some of the Competition Commission's initiatives, we do not believe the recommendations go far enough in developing policies that will help reinvigorate our high streets and the communities they serve."
