Siege man in court

A man arrested after a 36-hour siege at a Wigan home has appeared in court.

Craig Bailey, of Hereford Road, Hindley, was charged with false imprisonment, possessing an imitation firearm and threats to commit criminal damage when he appeared before Wigan Magistrates Court.

The 34-year-old was arrested in the early hours of Sunday after an incident in which armed police were called to an address in Hindley.

The siege began last Friday lunchtime and ended early on Sunday morning.

Bailey and a 31-year-old man were arrested. The younger man was later released without charge.

Scores of police officers, including expert hostage negotiators and other emergency services personnel were involved in the operation and a number of families were evacuated from their homes.

Bailey was committed straight to Liverpool Crown Court for further proceedings.

His first appearance before a judge will be on January 27. He was remanded in custody.
