Spaniards cancel friendly over swine flu fears

Spanish top-flight side UD Almeria have cancelled a pre-season friendly with Wigan Athletic because of concerns over swine flu.

Latics confirmed that officials representing the La Liga side had taken the decision not to travel to Wigan.

UD Almeria had been due to play Latics at the DW Stadium on August 8.

Scottish Premier League side St Mirren will replace the Spaniards as the first visitors to Latics' newly renamed home.

Latics will also face Preston North End and Norwich, both away, in the

coming weeks.

In recent weeks swine flu has swept across the borough, forcing pupils at a number of schools to miss the last week of school after falling ill.

GPs across Wigan reported that the number of people contacting them about swine flu was increasing daily.
