FOR most of the country, Boxing Day is simply a day of rest after Christmas.
However, here in Wigan, we have a particularly special tradition and it doesn’t really involve sitting back and relaxing.
For December 26 is the date where fancy dress takes over and our reporter Greg Farrimond headed to Pure Party in Wigan town centre to find out what the most popular outfits are!
During the day the town’s pubs and bars are full of people in all sorts of wacky attire, while Latics fans will this year be travelling to Old Trafford in fancy dress too – last year they were famously recognised for more than 100 bananas bouncing around in the away end at Wolves!
But the main attraction has, and always will be, King Street at night.
This time of year sees so many people head out to the nightlife hotspot.
But it’s the night after Christmas which sees thousands of people cram on to King Street in the most unusual costumes.
I sampled just a small amount of the costumes on offer at Pure Party in town.
What makes King Street such an attractive sight on Boxing Night is the creativeness of people who design their own outfits too.
From the Mankini worn by Sacha Baron Cohen’s alter-ego Borat (which I wouldn’t dare try and pull off by the way) to the less risque choices such as Christmas crackers and Smurfs, Wigan is awash with all sorts of different characters.
Janet Ryding, store manager of the Galleries Pure Party store, said: “We are so busy this time of year, it’s fantastic.
“We’ve got a fresh line of stock in this year to add to what we already have so it’s looking like it’s going to be a big one.
“Traditional costumes always go down a treat, such as Batman and the Toy Story characters while the morph suits are also going down well too!”
I sampled an array of costumes which the management say are popular this year.
Janet added: “We have a wall at the back of the store now where we’re asking cutomers to come back and show us what they looked like!
“We’re already getting busy for Boxing night, and we’re expecting the big day itself to be very busy.
“Different groups are tending to go for different things.
Nuns and cavegirls are particular hits with the girls while classics like Batman and Bananaman are popular with the lads once again!”
