Store's discount deal is blasted

When Patricia Kenny heard that Wigan's Asda store was selling cut-price TVs she rushed straight down to buy her fiance one for Christmas.

But when she arrived at the Robin Park store she was dismayed to discover it had run out of stock – even though the advertised offer still had several days to run.

The 47-year-old, who lives in Marsh Green, feels angry that customers in Wigan have missed out on the discount deal while TVs have been readily available to people in other parts of the country.

She feels cheated and believes many other Wiganers feel the same way.

Ms Kenny said: "One of my family members purchased a television from Asda on Thursday November 29.

"It was a Sanyo 32in flat screen and its original price had been 497.

"The week before, a roll back price was placed on the item, lowering the price to 327, plus a further 10% discount was placed on the television on November 29.

"This meant my relative got the TV for 296, making a saving of 200 on the original price.

"I went down to Asda the same night to purchase one for my fiance as a Christmas present, but there were none left."

Ms Kenny tried to buy the same TV from the St Helens Asda store, but was told it was not selling the set at the same discount price because the special offer was only available at the larger Asda superstores like Wigan.

She said: "I spoke to a customer service guy who put me through to an escalation manager.

"He offered to ring the Wigan store manager and promised me that I'd be first on the waiting list if any more came in at the weekend.

"I never got a call from the Wigan branch so I went to the store on Sunday December 2 when I was told there would not be a delivery till Wednesday December 5 when – guess what – both the roll back price and the 10% offer was finished and the price of the TV was to be 497 again.

"I called the customer service manager on Monday, December 3 and was told he had spoken to his managers and there was nothing they could do."

Ms Kenny, who works as a buyer for an engineering company in Skelmersdale, has now sent a written a formal letter of complaint to Andy Bond, chief executive of Asda's head-quarters in Leeds.

A spokesman for Asda said: "The Evening Post asked Asda to confirm how many of the cut price TVs they had in stock at Asda Wigan during the offer period and how many were sold to customers, but it declined to provide this information.

"This was a very popular offer and as quickly as the TVs went on the shelves customers were snapping them up.

"During the offer ASDA saw a 478% uplift in sales of this product. Extra stock was ordered to deal with the high demand and our Wigan store received its stock allocation.

"This was a Supercentre deal only, so Mrs Kenny should not have been advised to go to St Helens and for that we apologise. We have not received Ms Kenny's letter but we assure her that when we do, we hope to resolve this matter for her."
