Storm Doris hits Wigan borough

The effects of Storm Doris can be felt across the North West on Thursday with high winds causing chaos on the road network.

The Met Office has said the storm is developing into a "weather bomb". It has under gone what experts call Explosive Cyclogenisis, where central pressure inside a frontal depression can fall at a very rapid rate forcing violent winds from the system known as "bombs".

An amber weather warning remains in place with gusts of 70mph expected.

10:00am - Haigh Hall high ropes and mini-golf course have been closed

10:12am - North West Ambulance Service called to incident at Ashurst Hall Lane in Appley Bridge.man taken to Royal Albert Edward Infirmary - no details of injuries but no major trauma

10:36am - Trains between Wigan and Liverpool Lime Street are currently cancelled until 16.20 due to the poor weather conditions.

11:17am - Lancashire Police report a motorist had a lucky escape when a tree narrowly missed a driver. Hall Lane in Wrightington remains closed.

11:55am - The M6 is currently closed in both directions over the Thelwall Viaduct due to high winds, meaning motorway routes in and out of the borough will be affected.

12:04pm - Pennington Flash has been closed due to falling trees, Wigan Council has said. The borough's binmen are continuing to brave the adverse conditions and so far no collections have been cancelled. There may be delays though, a town hall spokesman added.

12:21pm - The council says it has received reports of at least 12 trees being felled across the borough

12:52pm - Coun Nathan Murray tweets that Drummers Lane in Bryn is closed at junction with Soughers Lane. "Road damaged near pumping station."
