A DRUNKEN hit-and-run driver who mowed down and killed a Wigan student was today behind bars.
Zoe Murphy was too busy groping around in the footwell of her car for a beer can to see 23-year-old Jamie Martin crossing the road in front of her in Rusholme.
The Peugeot 806 ran over the 23-year-old, inflicting fatal injuries. But instead of stopping, the vehicle, which also had two passengers aboard, sped off leaving Manchester Met student Jamie for dead.
After seeing his killer jailed at Manchester Crown Court this week, Jamie’s mum Shirley, speaking alongside his dad Vincent, at their home in Springfield, said: “I just keep thinking ‘what a waste of a life’ and then you look at that woman’s life.
“Give me 23 years of Jamie’s life than 75 of hers. He was an amazing boy who had everything to live for.
“He was very happy in his life, he was loving and sensitive and we can only guess about what he might have gone on to achieve.”
Murphy, 30, formerly of Stonebeck Road, Bagueley, was jailed for four years and eight months.
She had pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving while under the influence of alcohol, failing to stop after and report a traffic collision and driving while unlicensed and uninsured.
It emerged during the case that Murphy had previous convictions for both drink-driving and failing to stop after a collision.
