Talented trainees urged to take WorldSkills challenge

Hundreds of Wigan's best apprentices are being asked to show off their skills and sign up with WorldSkills UK to be considered for the country's premier skills competition '“ and start a journey that could lead to national and even global recognition.

The cream of the crop will compete with the hope of being crowned the nation’s number one apprentice in their chosen skill.

Each successful competitor that makes it through the regional heats will proudly represent his or her college, business and region in the national final competition and demonstrate their ability, according to strict standards.

As Brexit looms large and the UK’s skills gap widens, WorldSkills UK competitions will present the nation’s largest skills drive, with the hope of inspiring future generations into skilled professions.

Ben Blackledge, director of education and skills competitions at WorldSkills UK, said the competitions would be an inspirational beacon for those seeking to secure rewarding careers in the region.

“WorldSkills UK Competitions will change thousands of lives for the better.

“We know the importance of pushing apprentices to their full potential.

“Each competition will boost a competitor’s self-belief and raise their skill set to an international level, which will prove key for the UK to remain competitive in the global market.”

The National Final will also present the chance for the UK to prove that business in UK remains buoyant as the country is set to undergo bold and ambitious change.

WorldSkills UK competitions are run in over 50 skill areas from engineering, technology and construction through to creative, lifestyle and digital.

Apprentices who excel in the National Finals could be invited to compete to represent the UK at the WorldSkills international final event in Kazan, Russia in 2019.

Here the World’s best apprentices from nations around the globe will compete for personal and national pride - and the chance to be crowned the World’s best.

Registration for WorldSkills UK Competitions has nown begun and will end on April 7.
