A WIGAN-based charity set up to raise money for research into male-related cancers has hit a fund-raising milestone and handed over a hefty cheque to the Christie hospital.
Men Matter made the £10,000 donation this week and it will be used to fund further research in Prostate, Testis and Penile cancers all exclusive to men.
The Wigan charity was set up by local businessman Bernard Edumnds who realised awareness was low on such cancers after his battle with prostate cancer.
So far Men Matter has raised more than £450,000 to male cancer research. Commenting on this donation , Professor Noel Clarke Head of Urology at Christie and Salford Royal said: “This is a further tremendous effort by Men Matter, their support of male cancer research is vital if we are to reduce male cancer outcomes.
“Bernard’s drive and passion in creating male awareness and much needed funds is life saving to our efforts here at the Christie”.
There are 42,000 cases a year of Prostate cancer and 11,000 deaths the biggest male cancer killer, yet there is limited central government funding which makes Men Matter support vital.
Mr Edmunds said: “It’s very important that Men Matter continues to work tirelessly to raise these much needed funds, the people of Wigan continue to be very generous in their donations and support for Men Matter, recent events like the Wigan Rotary Club Run4Life fun run raises fantastic sums which are donated to Men Matter”
