A TERRIFIED newsagent was threatened with a meat cleaver during a raid on her store.
The robber threatened to slash the 54-year-old as she struggled to open the till, then he fled with cash and cigarettes.
Only moments earlier two young children had been in Woodhouse Stores on Woodhouse Lane, Beech Hill.
Police say the intruder may have been waiting outside for the shop to empty. He stalked in and ordered the shopkeeper to open the till.
She tried to obey but found it wouldn’t open. In her panic she had forgotten she had been halfway through keying in stock which prevented its opening.
His patience running out, the robber said: “You’ve got one minute to empty the till or else I’m going to cut you.”
Eventually she succeeded and was made to stuff money and cigarette packs into a plain green-blue carrier bag.
He backed out of the shop saying: “Don’t call police: I’ve got people watching the place.”
Police have appealed for information about the raid which happened at around 6.10pm on Sunday. The robber is described as white, 5ft 4ins tall, of slim build and was wearing a grey hooded jumper with a red and grey scarf.
Det Con Lee Jamieson of Wigan CID said: “Innocent staff members simply going about their job were threatened with a meat clever and I appeal to anyone who might have information to come forward.
“If anyone witnessed this incident, recognises the description given or knows anything about this robbery please come forward.”
Anyone with information should call Wigan CID on 0161 856 5307, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
