THOUSANDS of people last year used the borough’s NHS Walk-in Centre greatly helping to relieve the pressures on local accident and emergency departments.

New figures just released show a staggering 58,249 patients, were seen, an average of 160 patients a day.

A particularly busy time for the centre, which is run by Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (Bridgewater), was Christmas when 1,720 patients were treated over the festive period for a range of minor injuries and ailments.

The Walk-in Centre is based at Leigh Health Centre and has a team of specially trained and experienced nurses on hand seven-days-a-week to treat a range of non-serious conditions ranging from suspected simple fractures and allergic reactions to injuries and infections.

Louise Simpson, Leigh Walk-in Centre Clinical Services Manager said: “Last year was an extremely busy year for our staff at Leigh NHS Walk-in Centre.

“We are tremendously proud of the high quality care we have provided to such a high volume of patients.

“We are also pleased that we have been able to reduce the pressures on the Accident & Emergency department at The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary as well as other local hospitals.

“We want to encourage even more local people to use our services in 2016.

“The Walk-in Centre is open every day of the week to help treat any minor ailments and illnesses such as cuts or wounds, sore throats, suspected simple fractures, rashes and allergic reactions, bites or stings, minor burns or scalds, minor head injuries, coughs and colds, sprains and strains, earache, emergency contraception, eye injuries and infections.”
