THREE people, including a young child, have been taken to hospital following a head-on collision near Wigan town centre.

The crash, between a Nissan Almera and a Ford Focus, happened at around 1pm on the Seven Stars bridge on Wallgate, which is one-way.

Two men in their 50s and a child, believed to be five years old, were taken to Wigan Infirmary but their injuries are not serious. All three casualties had self-evacuated before the fire service reached the scene. The road was closed while police and paramedics also attended.

As a result there was a heavy backlog of traffic around the area, particularly on the saddle junction.
