WIGAN joins with towns and cities across the nation to light a beacon to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE Day on Friday (May 8).

A ceremonial torch in Haigh Hall will ignite the brush wood tower at exactly 9.32pm ... exactly 70 years since peace broke out after six years of war.

The sacrifice of people from Wigan, Leigh and the surrounding towns and villages who took part and contributed to the war effort during the Second World War will be remembered and celebrated.

Official lighting will be performed by the Mayor of Wigan Phyll Cullen plus veterans and local cadets.
