Firefighters were called to the northbound carriageway of the M61 motorway at junction six at Horwich at around 7.15am to put out the blaze.

Smoke was reported to be drifting across the motorway and the lorry was on the hard shoulder as fire crews put out the flames.

Two lanes of the motorway were closed and there were long queues as vehicles moved into the remaining open lane.
