Transsexual's anger at 'sir' slur
A furious transsexual has hit out at pharmacy chain Boots after an assistant in one of its Wigan stores insisted on calling her "sir" in front of other customers.
Crissi Makin underwent a full sex change operation six years ago to turn her from being a man into a woman.
The 51-year-old says she has always been treated as a lady by people in Wigan and was shocked and upset by comments made to her by a pharmacy assistant at her local Boots store in the Gerard Centre, Ashton.
Crissi has to collect a prescription of painkillers every fortnight for a back injury following a bad fall, but says she was repeatedly subjected to "transgender-phobic" remarks from the female counter assistant.
Boots has apologised and says it has retrained the member of staff in question.
Crissi, who lives in Ashton, said: "Every time I went to pick up my prescription the lady would hand it to me and then say: "There you go, Christine Makin, Sir."
"The first time it happened I was extremely upset and just walked out. I later explained to her that I am transgender and that she should call me "Ms", but it's the same scenario every time. It's very distressing."
Crissi says she has been publically humiliated by the pharmacy assistant over a three-month period.
She said: "I think it's an absolute disgrace. Outwardly I look like a woman and dress fashionably, but conservatively so I don't stand out. I like living in Wigan. It's a nice place and I haven't had any other problems here."
