A TRICKY salvage operation will have to be carried out after a tree collapsed onto a bridge at a Wigan beauty spot.
Fortunately there was no-one nearby as the heavy trunk came smashing through the recently installed railings of the span near to Haigh Hall’s plantation gates.
Staff quickly trimmed away branches so that they did not block the bridge, but removal of the bulk of the tree could be a tougher ask.
A spokesman for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust said: “We will need a tractor to remove the rest of the tree but it isn’t the most accessible of spots.
“But fortunately there is no structural damage to the bridge and the damage to the railings is minimal.”
The Environment Agency carried out improvements to the bridge only a few months ago.
