A FAMILY had a lucky escape when a 40ft tree was blown over and fell through the roof of their home.
The tree, which was standing in front the semi-detached house on Queensway, in Higher Ince, became weakened in high winds and began to list towards the house just after 12.30pm on Wednesday.
However, the tree did not fall completely and avoided fully hitting the two-storey house, with damage restricted to several of its topmost branches punching a hole in the roof and smashing tiles, ending up in the loft.
The family, who were in their home at the time, were uninjured in the incident. Firefighters from Hindley station made the scene safe before waiting with the occupants for the building inspector to visit the property.
After checking the house the inspector pronounced the house safe for the family to remain, although the fire crews did not have suitable equipment to remove the tree.
