It was a busy night for firefighters after they tackled two suspicious fires in one night.

Crews from Hindley and Atherton attended a caravan fire on Melrose Avenue, Leigh, at around 12.40am this morning, Friday, that had spread to a nearby storage yard.

Firefighters were on the scene for around half an hour putting the fire out and preventing it spreading further through the yard which was full of wood.

The caravan had been abandoned in a lane behind the houses for some time and the fire is being treated as suspicious.

A crew from Leigh were then called to a car fire at around 2.10am this morning on Lakeside in Leigh.

When they arrived they found a Citroen C2 had been completely destroyed by fire.

Crew manager Mark Anderson said: “We believe the fire had a suspicious cause and the matter has been passed to the police for them to investigate..

“The car had been parked on the road for a while and had been completely destroyed. We think someone may have deliberately set it on fire.”
