UFO spotted over Orrell
As stories about "UFO mysteries" hit the national headlines, could Wigan have recently received an alien visitation of its own?
These images of slow-moving bright lights were captured on the mobile phone camera of Shaun Campbell as he and fiance Samantha Cross watched from their Orrell flat.
The unidentified craft were seen over the skies of Billinge and Up Holland in the early hours of Boxing Day morning as the couple returned home from a Christmas party.
After filming the bizarre sight, Shaun thought little more of it until he saw news stories last week of very similar happenings in other parts of the country.
In Scotland a man said he saw three large glowing shapes moving slowly across the sky, while in Louth, Lincolnshire, further lights were seen which have since been linked to the unexplained damage inflicted on a wind turbine nearby.
Shaun, a 23-year-old from Church Drive, said: "When I heard about those incidents they sounded very similar to the ones we experienced.
"I am pretty sceptical about UFOs and all that stuff but I can't offer a more rational explanation for what we saw.
"They certainly weren't aeroplanes or helicopters.
"We had been visiting family on Christmas Day, had just got home at about 1am and were getting stuff out of the car and taking it into the flat when I saw something in the sky.
"It was an orange ball in the sky, like a ball of flames pulsing. Samantha and I watched it move from the direction of Billinge towards Up Holland before seeing another one rising up from Billinge.
"Two more followed exactly the same path. I rang my mum at her home in Wigan Road and she said she could just see the last one too.
"I was just intrigued by it all but Samantha was quite scared. We were watching it all for about 15 minutes and I got it on my mobile camera."
The Wigan Evening Post's resident ufologist, Jon Peake, said: "Though the video shows very little, whatever the object is – it definitely falls into the category of Unidentified Flying Object.
"If that means it is a floating Chinese Lantern, a firework or something else, it is still unidentified and this man was right to bring it to our attention.
"Some people, when they hear 'UFO' automatically assume you are talking about an alien spaceship – but UFO simply means it is not a conventional flying machine.
"It is simply unidentifiable and in the sky."
