POLICE are hunting a race-hate thug who head-butted and hurled foul abuse at a Wigan town centre bar customer.

The black victim was struck in the face during the racist tirade by a bald-headed stranger in Little Fifteens in Wallgate.

Bar employees and door staff both saw what happened. The customer was minding his own business when he was called over by the attacker who made some racial remarks and then suddenly hit him, either by head-butting or punching him

Tony Callaghan

The owner of the bar, Tony Callaghan, said today that he was “appalled” by the attack, saying that he hoped the perpetrator would be brought to justice and be banned from all Pub Watch Association bars and clubs in Wigan. Police were called to the premises at around 8.20pm last Saturday after receiving reports that a man had been assaulted.

They discovered that a man had made racist comments to another man before head-butting him and continuing to shout racist abuse.

The assailant was then escorted out of the pub by door staff and he ran off down Wallgate after handing his bottle of Peroni to one of them.

He is described as a white man of stocky build in his early to mid-40s with a bald or completely shaven head. He was wearing jeans and a black T-shirt.

PC Ian Brooks of GMP’s Wigan Division said: “The victim had gone out to enjoy a nice evening and was subjected to racist abuse before being head-butted in a completely unprovoked attack.

“The pub was quite busy at the time of the assault so we think it is very likely that somebody may have seen something.

“Abuse of this nature is completely unacceptable in civilised society and I would urge anybody with information to come forward.”

Mr Callaghan said: “I am appalled by what happened. This is the last thing we want happening in our establishments.

“We understand that some people do fight when they have alcohol but a targeted racial attack is something else. It’s the lowest of the low.

“Bar employees and door staff both saw what happened. The customer was minding his own business when he was called over by the attacker who made some racial remarks and then suddenly hit him, either by head-butting or punching him.

“He was immediately escorted to the door and he handed over his beer and suddenly ran off.

“The poor victim had come over from Manchester just for some quiet socialising and this happens.

“Everyone is welcome in our bars and we will not tolerate this.

“It doesn’t put Wigan in a good light.

“I hope they catch this guy and if he is brought to justice he deserves everything that comes to him. He would certainly be barred from every Wigan Pub Watch Association premises.”
