HEARTLESS vandals have struck at a cemetery in Wigan.

The headstones were targeted between 6.30pm on Monday, June 29, and 6pm on Tuesday, June 30, at Gidlow Cemetery on Wigan Road, Standish.

A woman was distraught to find that a loved-one’s grave had been vandalised. This has understandably caused immense distress within the community, and we are taking this seriously

Police were called by a family member of someone buried in the cemetery, whose grave had been damaged.

Police are now appealing to anyone who has information about the vandalism to come forward.

Police Constable Steve Waddington of Wigan division said: “This is senseless behaviour and over the last few weeks there have been a number of similar incidents.

“A woman was distraught to find that a loved-one’s grave had been vandalised. This has understandably caused immense distress within the community, and we are taking this seriously.

“We need to find the culprits, who may very well live the local area, so I am appealing to the community for help in identifying them. If you suspect who may be involved then please call us.”
