THE government has announced that Virgin trains will continue to operate the West Coast Mainline, which runs through Wigan, for a further 23 months.
The news comes after the collapse of First Group’s expected takeover in October.
The service, which runs lines through Wigan North Western to London and Scotland, will be run by Virgin until November 2014.
A report into the collapse of the First Group’s franchise deal is to be published later today.
The tendering process was halted because the Department for Transport made numerical mistakes.
