GENEROUS volunteers gave up a few hours of their weekend to help transform a stretch of canal.

Members of the Douglas Valley Lions Club were joined by residents to help clean up a one-mile section of waterway between Appley Bridge and Parbold moorings.

The volunteers painted locks and handrails along the canal, and have also performed tasks including picking up litter and cleaning graffiti.

The Lions club has organised regular work days since adopting the stretch of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal under an adoption scheme created by the Canal and River Trust.
