WIGAN residents are being urged to take extra care locking their doors and windows now the warm weather is here.

Police have reported that during the summer months there is often a rise in burglary as people are tempted to leave windows and doors open during the day and evenings providing thieves with easy pickings.

Police will be patrolling local neighbourhoods offering crime prevention advice to local residents and officers will be handing out leaflets to residents in hotspot areas.

Officers are urging residents to lock the doors and windows of their homes and cars and to report anything suspicious.

Det Insp Vinnie De Curtis said: “We tend to see a seasonal rise in burglary and theft during the summer months due to people leaving their windows open as they go to bed at night.

“An open window or door can often be an invitation to thieves who are then able to get into people’s homes without causing a disturbance.

“I urge local residents to report anything suspicious.”
