THE devastating extent of the blaze at Wharfside has been revealed as residents have been informed which apartments have been destroyed.

As fire crews assess the damage at Wharfside, off Heritage Way, they have confirmed which flats are condemned permanently.

It is really heartwarming to see the support the public is giving those affected. There have been various offers of help and donations made throughout the day

GMFRS Wigan Borough tweeted: “Wharfside Apts 18 - 25, 42-49, 66-73, 90-97 and 122- 135 are condemned permanently. No residents in the whole block can return to building.

“We’ve been collecting valuables from the flats where possible.”

Incident commander Paul Starling said: “It’s clearly very sad news for a lot of residents who are devastated to lose their homes and possessions.

“Our thoughts are with them and we are doing all we can to help them. Where we are able to, we are allowing people in, escorted by a police officer, to collect items and in those areas affected by fire our crew are going into flats to retrieve key property.

“It is really heartwarming to see the support the public is giving those affected. There have been various offers of help and donations made throughout the day.

“Our firefighters continue to work tirelessly at the scene and give as much support to residents as possible.”
