What's in a name
Sean Longbottom didn't like his name – so he changed it by deed poll.
After years of jibes about his unfortunate surname, the 20-year-old had had enough, and changed it to Sean Long.
Girlfriend Lauren Duffy, 21, from Heysham, Morecambe, said: "He's changed it from Longbottom to Long.
"Partly because we're getting married in three weeks and I'm also pregnant so he didn't want our baby to be called Longbottom.
"He doesn't like it, it's an embarrassing name. He's ginger and has got the name Longbottom and he said it's just been a nightmare. And I kind of asked him to.
"He didn't want to insult his grandad and his dad but they've taken it really well."
Longbottom isn't the only seemingly disliked surname in Lancashire - Nutters, Pratts and Gotobeds are alive and well.
Over in Fulwood, mother-of-two Anne Nutter, 88, admits her name has caused her problems over the years.
She said: "It's a name that one doesn't want to have these days. I've had all sorts of trouble with it. Phone calls, usually during the long school holidays. They just giggle and laugh."
Other eyebrow-raising surnames which are on the decline, according to a survey by global credit information group Experian, are Smellie, Daft, Jelly, Slow, Willy, Pigg, Hustler, Dyke and Gotobed.
