DAVE Whelan is to make a personal address to Latics fans ahead of the club’s crucial game against Leeds United on Saturday.

Mr Whelan, who stepped down as Latics’ chairman on Tuesday, will take to the pitch shortly before kick-off.

Club officials have urged supporters to take to their seats early to give the former chairman a rousing welcome.

A club spokesman said: “After resigning from his role as chairman earlier this week, Dave Whelan will make a personal address to the supporters from the pitch, at 2.45pm.

“Please take your seats early to mark the occasion, and herald the beginning of a whole new era for Wigan Athletic.”

Mr Whelan stepped down as chairman earlier this week after a 20-year spell at his beloved Latics.

He remains Latics’ owner but has handed over the day-to-day running of the club to his grandson, David Sharpe.
