WORKMEN accidentally created this spectacular shower after breaking a Wigan water main.

Reader Brian McDonough from Spring View took this picture on Sunday morning after excavations for BT severed a 10ins pipe.

Thousands of gallons of water were lost as United Utilities engineers fought to stem the flow although the only premises to be left without a supply at any point was the nearby Lidl store.

A UU spokeswoman said that the store itself had its water restored at 3.30pm - four hours after the initial incident.

But a full repair wasn’t possible on the day because the broken pipe was encased in concrete. A full repair was carried out on Monday.

The spokeswoman added: “This was third party damage but we apologise for the disruption. We carried out the work as quickly as we could.”

Mr McDonough said: “It was quite a sight. At least Lidl and its car park got a clean!”
