Wife keeps husband's body in bedroom

After neighbours complained about the smell, Mexican police broke into Mercedes Velarde's home and found her husband's corpse on the bedroom floor.

Mercedes claims her husband Edmundo had died around a year ago in Mexico City and one of her sons regularly helped remove worms infesting his father's body.

Authorities said they were investigating Velarde's claim her husband died of natural causes.

They believe the man, in his early 60s, had mental problems that may have been linked to his death.

Bull sent to prison farm

A bull has been sent to jail in Serbia to save its life.

Four-year-old Micko has been moved to the farm at Novi Sad District Prison after his owner, Hamdija Djuric, was jailed for stabbing a man.

Branka Pasko of the animal protection society Arka said: "Since there are no animal quarantine facilities in Novi Sad, it was important to find a solution to accommodate the bull.

"So it was agreed to move him to the prison farm, where Djuric can occasionally visit him and take care of him.

Vets' dogs banned

The archetypal image of the country vet, driving through rural England accompanied by his faithful dog, is now a thing of the past as pets have been banned from travelling with their owners at work.

Under a new Government order, the James Herriot-inspired image of the country vet has been banished, because of fears for the welfare of dogs locked in cars while their owners work or bio-security fears if animals are allowed to run free.

Animal Health, the Defra agency responsible for the state veterinary service, said vets and other staff should not take their dogs in cars when on official business.

Novelty bank notes

Shopkeepers, bar staff and pensioners are being urged to check 20 notes after consumer watchdogs seized hundreds of "fakes" featuring film characters and football stars instead of the Queen.

Despite either a Simpson or a Shearer beaming out instead of the Sovereign, trading standards officers have taken a hard line against sellers amid fears they could be passed off as genuine notes.

The novelty notes were seized at a North East car boot sale and the errant seller given a formal warning.
