Wigan car repair garage left gutted after fire

A car repair garage has been left gutted after a large early morning fire tore through the building.

Seven crews from across Lancashire and Greater Manchester were sent to the auto-repair garage at the back of a house in Marsh Green, Wigan at around 3am today (March 18).

Firefighters supported by an aerial ladder platform used two water jets to put out the blaze at about 6am.

They spent several hours tackling the fire which is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault in a fuse box.

The fire has left the garage destroyed.

Gareth Gray, watch manager at Wigan fire station, said: "We were called to a large industrial garage on fire in Marsh Green, Wigan, at the rear of Starbucks, at around 3am.

"It was an auto-repair garage at the back of someone's house. We believe the fire has been caused by an electrical fault on a fuse box in the garage. It's completely gutted the garage."

"We had seven fire engines from the surrounding area out to this, including two from Wigan, one from Hindley, one from Atherton, two support units and a Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service's aerial ladder platform."

"Crews using four breathing apapratus used two water jets to put out the fire at around 6am."

He added: "Some firefighters are still there now damping down and while a fire investigation is being carried out."

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "The fire service made us aware of this. Officers arrived at the scene and found no suspicious circumstances or evidence of criminal activity."
