A WIGAN single mum who stole a pair of boots from a high street clothing store after “panicking” has been given a community sentence.

Mandy Henderson, from Whelley, pleaded guilty to the incident of theft, which occurred in a Primark store on February 27, at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court.

Henderson, of Sole Street, admitted picking up the boots, which were worth around £20, and attempting to leave the store without paying after slipping them into a carrier bag.

Nicola Ormerod, prosecuting, told the court Henderson, 37, went into the store at around 3.30pm and was noticed placing items into her basket by a security officer monitoring CCTV.

Ms Ormerod said: “She admitted the offence and when asked if she was going to pay for them said yes, then no, and then panicked.

“She also said her panicking was the reason she had not put the boots down.”

Henderson told police she had stolen the boots to wear herself and tested negative for any illegal substances when tested.

JPs gave Henderson a 12-month community order requiring her to carry out 40 hours’ unpaid work.
