A stunned Wiganer in France to follow England at the Euros said crazed Russian fans were like an “army” when they targeted him and his friends in an alleyway in Marseille.

A mobile phone video appears to show a few dozen Russian fans throwing bottles at the British travelling fans, causing them to fight back.

They are like an army unit. They are wearing the MMA gloves - like cage fighting gloves - and masks and balaclavas

But the 24-year-old fan from Wigan who took the video said it was part of a well-practised plan, and as soon as England fans reacted they were mobbed.

The five-minute long clip shows the Brits being swamped and rushed by the opposing fans, who apparently emerged from hiding in adjoining alleyways.

Wearing MMA gloves and masks - including a terrifying ‘Scream’ mask - the thugs can be seen lobbing bottles before taking cover under chairs to charge forward.

Punches are thrown while glass can be heard raining down on the pumped-up English fans in the frightening footage shot a few hours before England’s match on Saturday.

The 24-year-old construction worker said: “We were just singing and having a drink and they came from nowhere.

“They sent about 25 lads down, and started shouting and throwing bottles so the England fans came back at them, and then more Russians come out and attacked.

“They are like an army unit. They are wearing the MMA gloves - like cage fighting gloves - and masks and balaclavas.

“They have chairs and hide under them as the move, so nothing can hit them.

“There was about 150 to 200 of them in the end who just came from nowhere. It was lucky that there were some English who would fight back.

“If there wasn’t I think there would be a lot more people battered.”
