Residents are invited to show solidarity with those affected by gathering around the memorial outside the parish church at 7pm.

There will then be a minute’s silence at around 7.30pm followed by a balloon release.

The event, which is being organised by Glenn Daly and Nathan Ryding, is being publicised on Facebook.

Glenn from Swinley said: “When something bad happens in the area all of Wigan seems to pull together.

“I had friends at the concert who thankfully are safe. This is for people to show their respects and to show the people of Manchester that we stand with them.”

The Rector of Wigan, Rev Bill Matthews, said the parish church will be open if anyone wants to pray, light candles or simply speak to someone about the appalling events.

He said: “This is a very shocking event which has affected a lot of people. We need to pray for them, especially the young people and their families who will be anxious.”

Those attending are asked to bring pink balloons to be released.
