A WOMAN who lied about an attack by her boyfriend has been spared jail.
A judge heard Kelly McEwen had been frightened of her violent partner and gave a false statement to police. But she later voluntarily walked into a police station to make a new statement admitting she lied.
The distraught 31-year-old was given a four-month jail term suspended for 18 months and ordered to carry out 80 hours’ unpaid work. The court heard she had been in an abusive relationship and had been persuaded by Colin Lomas to make a false statement.
McEwen, of Morley Street, Atherton, had pleaded guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The court heard that Lomas attacked David Wallwork fracturing his jaw and cheekbone. Lomas, 33, had claimed Wallwork had attacked him and McEwen backed up this false statement.
Lomas, of Manchester Road East, Little Hulton, was jailed last month for 32 months.
