A WORKER has died after being crushed in an horrific forklift accident.
The 40-year-old man was confirmed dead at the scene on Friday morning, on Kirkless industrial estate, New Springs, despite frantic efforts by emergency services to save him.
An investigation has been launched by police, the Health and Safety Executive and Wigan Council.
The truck was lifted off the upper body of the victim by Wigan fire crews, using hydraulic equipment, during an operation supervised by Police.
When paramedics arrived at the scene, they say they found the victim in a critical condition.
A spokesmen for Greater Manchester fire service said: “Appliances from Wigan, Hindley and Leigh attended the scene on Cale Lane.
“It was reported to us that a man was stuck under a stacker truck.
“We attempted to remove him from the truck, but, he was confirmed dead at the scene.”
A spokesman for Greater Manchester police added: “Just after 10.45am on Friday, police were called to Kirkless Industrial Estate, Cale Lane, Wigan.
“Officers found the body of a 40-year-old man. It is believed he had been crushed by a forklift truck.
“Inquiries into the circumstances of his death are ongoing, and detectives are working alongside the Health and Safety Executive.”
The Wigan coroner has been informed, while a spokesperson for Wigan Council has confirmed they are working with Police and the HSE to investigate.
